Some may disagree but we purchased a 60 inch Flat Screen instead of the 60 inch plasma. I can hardly tell the difference in the picture between the ones we looked at. At the time the 60 inch plasma i looked at was almost 21,000 dollars while the flat screen was merely half that....
If you get the flat screen get HDTV, i love it and its like you are live

For gaming you want an LCD or DLP. LCD's are good but DLP's are probably the best, just don't leave the game paused while the tv is on for too long. Sony has a 40" and a 50" DLP that i was looking at. The 50" should be sufficient. I myself am looking into getting a 40" Sony Bravia LCD

Samsung 42"
I bought a Samsung 42" rear-projection HDTV and am very happy with it. Today, I should be upgraded to HDTV through the cable company, so I hope that the picture becomes even better.
Unfortunately, the current DVD player is a low quality device. Am waiting for a high resolution type to come in the mail, then the DVD created picture should be really great.
Plasma is great, but the expected life span is only 4-5 years, whilst LCD screens have basically a double that life span.
DLP is IMHO a current marketing ploy, soon all TV's have that.

Personally, I think this 'colored' TV thing is a fad that will never last. I still love my 8", B&W Hallicrafters. It gets FOUR VHF stations, but with an optional Channel Master converter, it can get UHF stations also, but there are only two in the area so far, and they only come on the air at 5PM.

I think the price they said it would be if it hit the shelves would be around 130,000 or so.....

I bought a 50" Samsung HDTV and think it's outstanding in every aspect. It was even cheaper that the Sony, which is also an outstanding product, and perhaps has a better picture than the Samsung, but for hundreds of dollars more.
