Default No-name brands

Hi all

Lately whilst I have been shopping for a Plasma TV I've noticed many no-name brands on display prominently in most stores. They are really trying to promote these brands.

What would these brands lack from your Sony and Panasonic's, and is it worth paying less for an unheard of brand TV?

Personally I'd advise caution - Plasma technology still has technical issues, so buying a cheaper set could find you paying more for a disappoitning viewing experience.

However, on saying that, someone store own brands aren't to bad - having recently bought a Philips widescreen TV, and before that a LG 42" Plasma, I have to say that the picture quality on my Matsui 24" was by far the better of the three, and that's just a store own brand (made by Phillips, ironically, I believe).

I buy a lot of no-name brand stuff, much to my husband's dismay, but I don't know that I would plunk down cash for a no-name plasma. Seems risky.

Yeah, even name-brand plasma TVs are not doing that well yet. I wouldn't feel ready to go with a cheaper company that might not have the finances and technical abilities of a more powerful brand. Frankly, I'm waiting for the overall technology to improve before doing anything.

I personally would not buy a plasma regardless of the name on it, but sound advice given above. Be careful with some of the generic no-name widescreen brands. Sometimes they cut corners and omit features you might take for granted. Which can lead to a less than pleasurable owning experience.

Make sure the resolution is up to snuff, connections and all the important stuff like that.

Good point, Triumph. I would hate to bring a TV home and then realize that something I'm used to on the older model doesn't exist on the newer one.

I just don't get why there's such a fuss over Plasma TVs right now, considering that NONE of them work that well. Why are people so interested in buying something that hasn't been perfected yet?

I think that plasmas have reached a certain level of status items, and many people care more about impressing their neighbors than really getting the best piece of equipment.

It seems to me that 3-4 years ago plasmas were the cutting edge. Now, though, they seem almost old to me. What has changed with plasmas? LCD's are hot right now.

I agree ...I think it's why we're seeing the prices on plasmas going down. If you love plasma, I think a little while longer and the deals will really exist!
I want LCD
