It's not merely a question of power; when you mix a film in surround, te stereo reduction is never the right balance. You don't have to be sitting at the focus of eight thousand watts of high efficiency loudspeakers like me; having the sound coming from the multiple directions gives extra information for the brain to distinguish more sound detail.
Certainly, for hearing what the mixer really intended, the system should be calibrated at 83dB for 20dB below peak level; but then you need very good soundproofind (or extremely tolerant neighbours)
